The Soundscape Explorer, designed and developed by Lunilettronik, is a sound and meteo data recorder for terrestrial (SET) and aquatic (SEA) environments also providing real-time Acoustic Complexity Index (ACI) computation. This device has unique characteristics because it is the only machine that records acoustic files while processing such files in real time using the ACI metric.
The Soundscape Explorer is equipped with environmental sensors (humidity, temperature, light and atmospheric pressure), two microphones (one for low frequencies (up to 48 kHz) and for higher frequencies (up to 192 kHz)), and two SD card slots that allow storing a maximum of 64 GB of acoustic data. In addition, the SET is fully programmable using stand-alone software, from 1 minute to 59 minutes in a 24-hour period. Different set-up options are available, such as changing the sampling rate, defining the recording schedule using one of the two microphones (192 kHz is recommended for recording insect sounds), changing the time setting, computing the ACI, changing the microphone gain, resetting the internal time, etc.
Its small dimensions (20 cm x 25 cm) encourage displacement in wild as well as in urban areas. Powered by rechargeable lithium ion batteries, autonomy is maximized by the extremely low consumption of the internal electronics. Moreover, the SET can be hung on any support using the two provided metallic brackets. Alluminum black anodized hinges and level retainers assure a complete closure of the waterproof plastic containing box.
Dedicated software allows efficient post-processing for the statistical treatment of ACI data.
